We took a little road trip today to do a little exploring. Our first destination was Las Catalinas, about an hour north of Tamarindo.
Las Catalinas is a new beach town that was created to encourage a way of life that is healthy, sustainable, fulfilling, and fun. The land was purchased in 2006 and the first buildings completed in 2011. The town is about 1000 acres and motorized vehicles are not allowed in the town. There are about 180 residences, two hotels, restaurants, shops, offices, plazas, fountains and recreational facilities. Lucky for us, (and the residents) there is parking outside the community. We walked through and down to Playa Danta which had a great beach with hardly anyone there. We enjoyed swimming and relaxing on the beach. Tobey swam out to the floating dock where he met a young man and his daughter. It was really windy so he had a harder swim back into shore! We visited with him and his family who are spending a couple months in the area before we decided to move to our next stop.On our way to Playa Grande we stopped for lunch near Protero at a seaside restaurant. We shared the garlic shrimp and it was SOOOO goood! At Playa Grande Ann and I had fun picking up sea shells (much to Gary’s disgust) and cooling off in the water. Again, there were very few people on the beach.Gary spotted an iguana on our way back to the car. We also saw a White-Throated Magpie jay before heading back to Tamarindo.Back at our place we had dinner and played some cards before walking back to town to check out the Friday night activities. Quite a few people were out and about with lots of bars and restaurants offering live music. We opted to have a Nutella crepe. There is a skate park tucked back behind some of the businesses with quite a few young people enjoying themselves. We had a great day. Pura Vida!
