Mexico 2012 RV Trip - Day 43 - February 7, 2012 San Cristobal

We planned to go into the city today and explore. After getting the scooter off the RV, it wouldn’t start. Seems like we have down this road before …  we just paid $350 pesos in Bacalar to have them to tell us it was just wet.

We caught a taxi to a scooter repair shop and were lucky that there was an bilingual gentleman visiting with the shop owner who helped us translate the problem. The owner directed one of his workers to get a tool kit together with possible parts and go back with us. Another taxi ride back to the RV park and he put the key in and it started right up … then it died. He worked on it a while, replaced a spark plug, and fiddled with some other wiring and it seemed to be fixed. Tobey went back to the shop on the scooter and they also replaced the horn switch. Repairs were $205 pesos (about $16.50 USD). This time we think it is really fixed!

We then checked out an alternate route out of here so we won’t have to go back through the narrow streets with the RV when we get ready to leave. The route seems pretty do-able.
From there, we went to the Centro to see the artisans market and look for a tour for tomorrow. The cathedral is located on the main square. There were several of the vendors walking around and a group was sitting on the steps chatting.

The artisans arket is set up near the Templo de Santo Domingo. It was fun to walk through and see all of the brightly colored weavings and crafts for sale.

We headed back to the RV around 4pm and enjoyed the HOT showers here at the campground. After dinner I had to make chocolate cake – seemed like a necessity after the stress of yesterday and the problems with the scooter today!
There are six RVs here tonight. We have really nice neighbors on both sides of us. The blue van is a young couple from BC, Canada, and the Class C to our right is a couple from France, traveling for 17 months with their three boys.

Noticing the brightly colored fabrics in your picture, do you have any idea where Mexicans get their fabric? I'm wondering if they weave it, or is it imported like much of our cheaper that fabrics come from Asia?

I believe that the fabrics are woven by local people. We took a tour today and saw how they make the fabric then the women embroider the beautiful designs onto the fabric. It was interesting.
