Day 26 Cross Country Bike Trip
We had mostly cloudy skies as the guys started off from Brackettville this morning. I stayed in town to be the chase vehicle and went by the Kinney County Courthouse. It is a beautiful building with the yellow and red stonework. The route started on Texas Ranch Road 334 which is the rough chip seal for several miles. Tobey said they must like everything big in Texas because it felt like they were riding on cobblestones! Fortunately, there wasn’t much traffic because there are no shoulders either. Not far out of town was a huge solar farm that was quite impressive.Just before they bounced in for lunch, it started raining. It didn’t last too long or rain too hard, so that was good.Their route then moved to Texas Hwy 55 which was still the horrible chip seal but had a small shoulder but lots of traffic! It is amazing to me that the speed limits on these roads is 75mph! We spotted several dead javelina and deer along the road – they must not be quick enough to outrun most of the big trucks. We stopped at some historical markers that talked about the mission founded near the Nueces River in 1762. While I was reading the signs, two fellows I know pulled up on their bikes! The clumps of green growing on the trees is mistletoe.I took advantage of the situation! We crossed the Nueces River a few miles outside of Campwood. There is a large dam across the river and a large water recreation area above the dam. We are camping next to the city park in Campwood tonight after the 48.5 mile ride today.
