Day 11 Cross Country Bike Ride
It was foggy when we got up this morning, but most of it cleared by the time we left the campground and made it back up to the highway. It almost looked like a rainbow going over the road out of the campground!Tobey started off wearing his long pants and jacket because the temperature was only 42.Looking back at Roosevelt Lake, the fog was still close to the water!About a mile down the road I took the scenic overlook and read the signs telling about the area. When you look to the south, at the top of the hill you could see some of the ancient cliff dwellings. I told Tobey we need to come back to this area when the government isn’t shut down so we could go to the museum and visit these sites. I would like to spend a week in this area! The desert plants were blooming and beautiful.Tobey did lots of climbing today – up and down! By the time he stopped for lunch, he had shed both the long pants and his jacket! He reloaded with sunscreen before taking off again.Tobey was still having problems with his bike today. It has an intermittent clicking sound in one of the pedals or bottom bracket that has him concerned. When we got to Globe, we loaded the bike and drove 76 miles to Safford because there are NO bike shops in Globe.
The folks at Cycle Path were very friendly and tried making some adjustments to the bike – tightening the crank and some of the spokes, and trying another pedal. We bought a couple of used pedals that Tobey can use in a pinch, but he hopes he doesn’t need them. They did not have the replacement pedals Tobey wants, but seemed to think he will be okay until we get to El Paso. El Paso was the closest place that we could find the new Shimano pedals! On the drive to Safford, Tobey determined that he is was going to skip part of this road because Highway 70 was terrible. Just outside of Globe the road goes through the Indian Reservation and there is no shoulder, narrow, and again, lots of traffic. Tobey said he doesn’t have to prove anything with this ride and skipping 40 miles of dangerous road is a wise decision. So agrees his wife!! He does plan to go back near Fort Thomas, Arizona and pick up his route from there.
Today’s ride was 31 miles – much shorter than he hoped to do, but we just roll with the punches.
This is a link that will show Tobey’s route. https://ridewithgps.com/events/71165-tobey-s-coast-to-coast-ride-2018-2019
On the left side of the map, it shows day by day stop and start points so you can look at each day’s route.
One of the weird things about the map is it lists days 10, 11, etc. after Day 1. Strange thing about Google numbering I guess!
OR you can scroll to the bottom of the day-to-day and there is a box that says “Show all on Map”. If you click that, it will change the map view to show all days traveled so far.
