January 25, 2019 - Amistad Natl Recreation Area to Brackettville, Texas

Day 25 Cross Country Bike Trip

We left our campsite and headed out to Highway 90 where Tobey unloaded his bike and got ready to ride. We were meeting Phil and Marcia at the gas station less than a mile down the road. The Texas chip seal roads have not been fun to ride on. I didn’t have a quarter, but you can see the size of the stones compared to a nickel. It makes for a bouncy, rough ride. The guys are ready to leave. They were originally taking a bypass route around Del Rio, but road construction on Hwy. 79 made that impossible. They had to continue on Hwy. 90 all the way through town with a good deal of traffic. We went by the Laughlin Army Airfield and there were several historic markers talking about the important role Texas played in military aviation through the years. Apparently, the only plane shot down during the Cuban Missile Crisis in early 1960s was from Texas, as well. There were some pretty wealthy Texans in the 1800s. (as well as nowadays, too!) Can you imagine owning 70,000,000 acres of land? I don’t know if he was one of the seven survivors of the Indian raids and drought, but will have to look that up!2019-1-25 Delores TownsiteWe found out where some of the pipe fitters must be working. They are running new pipelines and there were stacks of pipes!2019-1-25 pipeWe also went by several large oil storage tanks. 2019-1-25 oil tanksThe guys had a headwind most of the afternoon and those terrible roads. They got to Brackettville just before 3 pm. While Tobey and Phil rested, Marcia and I walked to Fort Clark Springs a few blocks away. We crossed the creek on our way up to the site. We crossed it twice!Fort Clark was a US Military fort in operation for almost 100 years, from 1852 to just after WWII. It is located at the headwaters of the Las Moras Creek.Outside the Guardhouse Museum they had one of the prisoner transport cages on display. I was managing to escape! The Museum is only open from 1-4pm on Saturdays during the winter, so we were not able to go in. This is one of the old barracks.Tobey had searched for best barbeque places in Texas before starting this trip and Ziggy’s Roadside BBQ here in Brackettville was one. We went there for dinner tonight and arrived before the rush. You place your order as you come in, then go find your table. 2019-1-25 ZiggysTobey and I shared a ribs and brisket plate with onion rings and sweet potato fries. There was so much food and it was so good!2019-1-25 dinnerThen they came around and gave us a complimentary strawberry cobbler for dessert!2019-1-25 strawberry cobblerWhile we were waiting for our food we heard the waitress answering the phone for a take-out order say that they were closed because they had run out of food! I’m glad we got there when we did!!2019-1-25 out of foodToday Tobey’s ride was 42.9 miles – now over 1300 miles!! We are staying by the community swimming pool and near the public library tonight.
