Last night we talked to our friends, Phil and Marcia. Phil has already done this cross country bike ride and said he was able to ride from Columbus to El Paso in one day. Tobey originally planned to stay on BLM land before getting to El Paso. Well, Phil’s words were like waving a red flag in front of a bull to Tobey! Challenge accepted and accomplished.
The riding conditions were perfect for Tobey today.
It was sunny, he had a tailwind, not much traffic, and a smooth road. He didn’t get away from Columbus on Hwy 9 heading east until 10 am (that’s another long story!). We stopped for a lunch break about 12:15 and he had already ridden 35 miles. After lunch he even shed his long pants!
On Highway 9 we went by an area that had rock cairns. Cairns have a long history and purpose, one that newer stacks sometimes subvert. These piles aren't true cairns, the official term for deliberately stacked rocks. The word means "mound of stones built as a memorial or landmark." Because we are so close to the border I wondered if these were landmarks for people crossing the border illegally, similar to Underground Railroad signals! We also saw several hawks along the way. Pretty cool.
Every time we checked in, he said he still had legs to keep going, so he did! As he was heading south on Hwy. 273 through Sunland Park, NM we encountered road construction. It was almost 4 pm, so we loaded the bike and called it a day. We drove into El Paso and will spend the night here before he takes off tomorrow.
We are having technical problems with the blog, so the posts may look different for a while. We spent several hours (2 in Columbus at the library this morning and more than 2 here!) trying to sort it our. I think we have a work-around figured out, but it makes it more difficult for me. Bear with us as we work through it!
Tobey is quite proud of today’s ride.
Distance- 70.4 miles with an average speed of 17.3mph. Elevation gain – 1013’
Elevation loss – 1174’

So far he has ridden 838 miles! WOOHOO!!
This is a link that will show Tobey’s route. https://ridewithgps.com/events/71165-tobey-s-coast-to-coast-ride-2018-2019
On the left side of the map, it shows day by day stop and start points so you can look at each day’s route.
One of the weird things about the map is it lists days 10, 11, etc. after Day 1. Strange thing about Google numbering I guess!
OR you can scroll to the bottom of the day-to-day and there is a box that says “Show all on Map”. If you click that, it will change the map view to show all days traveled so far.
