February 5, 2019 - New Waverly to Votaw, TX

Day 36 Cross Country Bike Trip

We left The Woodlands and drove back to New Waverly so Tobey could resume his ride. It was overcast, but warm – almost 70 degrees when he got started about 9:45 this morning!2019-2-5-morning-start_thumb1While Tobey rode his first 20 miles, I stayed behind in New Waverly and did the laundry. By the time I caught up, he was still doing fine. There was a good number of lumber trucks heading toward us along Highway 150. Some were like the one below, others had long timbers that hadn’t been cut. 2019-2-5-logging-trucks_thumb2I missed it, but Tobey passed a house on his ride today – twice! 2019-2-5-moving-house_thumb42019-2-5-moving-house-3_thumb1As he was heading down the road, he passed the house. At one point, the house and pilot cars were stopped making sure it could negotiate turns and high spots in the road. I missed the whole thing!2019-2-5-moving-house-2_thumb1One of the things we have noticed as we head further east is how much standing water is along the roads. Swamps, bayous, and lots of mud! I can imagine as the weather gets warmer, there will be lots of mosquitos, too! Another thing we have noticed is how much trash is along the road. There are several “adopt a highway” markers, but it doesn’t appear they are doing their job. We both remarked at it reminded us of parts of Mexico.2019-2-5-water-along-road_thumb2Our last road into Votaw was an old highway. Needless to say, not much maintenance has been done on it!2019-2-5-road-coming-into-Votaw_thumAs Tobey rounded the last corner to our overnight spot, the SIXTH dog of the day came toward him. Fortunately, this one way friendly! Tobey said the one before was pretty vicious. Tobey got off his bike and put it between them and kept yelling at the dog, “go home!” He said it didn’t want to back down. 2019-2-5-friendly-dog_thumb22019-2-5-end-of-day_thumb1After 60 miles, he was still smiling as he pulled up to our overnight camp spot at Home Town Burgers.

This little town is tiny – maybe 50 people. I’m not sure how Tobey found this little place, but he had contacted them before we embarked on this trip and arranged to stay here. Terri and her husband, Ronny, own this busy little carry-out restaurant. We had the best burgers, fries, and shakes for dinner tonight and they are letting us park next to their restaurant. After dinner, she came over to the RV to check if we needed anything and to make sure we were okay. You couldn’t ask for nicer people! If you ever get near here, stop in! 2019-2-5-Home-Town-Burger_thumb1Tobey’s ride was 60.5 miles today taking him over 1800 miles so far! This is a link that will show all of Tobey’s route so far. https://ridewithgps.com/events/71165-tobey-s-coast-to-coast-ride-2018-2019

On the left side of the map, it shows day by day stop and start points so you can look at each day’s route.

OR you can scroll to the bottom of the day-to-day and there is a box that says “Show all on Map”. If you click that, it will change the map view to show all days traveled so far (but be prepared for a short pause as takes a while for the file to load).
