February 2, 2019 - La Grange to Burton, Texas

Day 33 Cross Country Bike Trip

Phil and Marcia’s son, Aaron joined us today to ride with the guys. When he unloaded his bike, he discovered he had a flat tire, so after replacing the tube, they were ready to ride at 9am.Marcia and I stayed behind to visit the Texas Quilt Museum which opened at 10. We walked over to the Fayette County Courthouse which was just across the corner. What a beautiful building! There was a small farmers’ market going on, but I didn’t need any eggs, candles, or nick-knacks,  so I didn’t spend any money.I really liked all of the old buildings along their courthouse square. We got back to the museum and in at 10 when they opened. It isn’t very big, but they had some beautiful quilts on display. One of the quilt artists they featured was Hollis Chatelain from North Carolina. She had beautiful quilts featuring the people of Africa. She used colored pencil drawings which were scanned, enlarged and digitally printed, then quilted. We were not allowed to photograph any of the quilts in the museum, but they would take one picture at the end with our favorite quilt. They were amazing!

Our route took us from Warrenton through Round Top and on to Burton.  We went by what has to be the antique sales capital of the US! There were more sales barns and buildings set up with sales “stalls” than you can imagine. Apparently, in April and October people come from all over the country to buy and sell antiques. Aaron told us that Hwy 237 is almost impossible to navigate during that time! Today, the road was pretty clear! When we reached Burton, we loaded the bikes and drove into Brenham for BBQ lunch. Marcia and Phil drove Aaron back to La Grange and Tobey and I came back to Burton to visit a long-time friend and Tobey’s old boss from our years in Minnesota. (1978-1980!) We are camping in his driveway tonight!Lee and his friend, Vi, took us out to dinner and we had a great time visiting with them. Today’s ride was only 27.4 miles which was like a rest day for Tobey! (Since he rode almost 79 yesterday, that is a good thing!)

It is raining tonight and we hope it stops by morning! We will meet Phil and Marcia down the road on our way to Navasota.
