It’s Sunday and the people in Mexico love the beach and spend all day here. This morning we had a view of the river that flows out to the ocean and could see people in the water. We headed down the beach to watch some of the surfers in the water. On our morning walk we met a nice young woman and her two daughters, 9 and 13 years old. The woman lives in Portland, but her daughters live with the grandparents here in Colima, Mexico. The 13 year old, Mila, smiled at us a couple times and when Tobey said hello, that was all it took to get them talking. We spent a long time visiting and letting Mila practice her English (which was actually much better than my Spanish!). The 9 year old was shy and her English not as good, but she was a cutie. Their mom was really friendly and very chatty. She is here spending a couple weeks with her daughters before returning to Oregon.
This afternoon we headed back south on the beach to check out the Malecon in El Real which is supposed to be nice and have lots of restaurants. It was about 2 miles down the beach, so that meant 2 miles back. We were a bit envious of this family’s big umbrella. They had a table and 5 or 6 chairs behind it and they were ALL in the shade!Once we reached the Malecon, we walked it to the end and into El Real, another small community along the beach. There were several more upscale looking hotels and homes. This was the Brisas de Escalara, a hotel and restaurant, complete with a waterslide. The restaurant was packed and the pool and waterslide were very popular. We decided we preferred out “quieter” end of the beach and headed back. Part way back we saw a young man carrying a girl out of the water. There are strong riptide currents here and we didn’t know if she got caught in one, but she was exhausted. After a short while, and with the help of a couple friends, they were able to get her up and going in a few minutes. Pretty scary.
As evening descended on the beach, the families were packing up and heading out.The sunset was beautiful again tonight. We watched the fishermen casting their nets in the fading light. The family who rents the tables and chairs were busy folding umbrellas, chairs, and tables and loading them into their trucks to be stored until next weekend.Tomorrow we will say goodbye to this beautiful beach and head a little further north to Malaque.
