This morning we took a short walk to a camping spot mentioned on ioverlander and we are very happy with our choice instead. It was less than one half mile up and around a hill then back down to the beach. There were several restaurants and it looked like it would have been much more crowded and no view of the water. We were very happy with our choice!
Juan Carlos told us about a lagoon between our camping spot and Zihuatanejo that we could probably camp and go kayaking so we decided to hit the road and check it out.
We passed this beautiful fruit stand and stopped to get mangos. One kilo was $20 pesos – just over $1.00 USD. The lady at the stand wanted us to buy some coco agua. I do not like coconut water, but Tobey said he would try some. He went and got a very small glass from the RV and she gave him a taste – a full glass! I didn’t care for it but Tobey was polite and drank it all. She said it was no charge because it was so little, but we gave her money anyway. She was very nice.Back on the road, Tobey said there needed to be a pullout to see the ocean and sure enough, there was! El Mirador restaurant had a large parking area and we had a chance to look down at the ocean from the bluff.Continuing on, Juan Carlos recommended Enramada Teresita Restaurant as a place to eat so that was our next stop. We asked if we could park in their lot and stay overnight if we had dinner there. They said yes and even helped us get settled in a spot! It is across the road and behind the restaurant, but it will do.
Tobey got me an inflatable kayak for Christmas and this was our first chance to try it. It was easy to get set up and once we were ready, we lugged it across to the lagoon and had our maiden voyage. The lagoon is an interesting place. There is a small opening where the ocean comes into the lagoon and boats are able to get through when the tide is right. When we launched, the lagoon was very shallow for the first part of our ride – we could have walked halfway! There were loads of pelicans in the lagoon and they were having great success catching the many fish that were jumping out of the water. Tobey told me not to freak out and jump if one of them landed in the kayak! Since December I have had problems with my shoulder so we we were only out about an hour, but it was good for our first time! After taking the kayak back to the RV, we went and walked on the beach. It is a LONG beach! There were a few groups of people fishing and having good luck. They were not using poles, just fishing line wound on a spool! There were a couple men using nets and bringing in quite a few fish every time they threw them out. It was time for dinner so we went back to the restaurant. There was a Mexican duet singing for the table behind us. They played and sang for at least 30 minutes! Tobey had the fish tacos and I had the coconut shrimp. Mine was better! We split the fried bananas for dessert. They were served with sweetened condensed milk and “crema” which was like a very soft cream cheese. It was yummy!!!After dinner the owner of the restaurant walked back to the lot with us and said when he finished up, he will put the chain across the parking lot and it is very safe and quiet here. We plan to go kayaking again in the morning and then will decide if we stay another night.
