2024-4-7 Brady, Texas to Canyon Lake, Texas

We got to sleep in this morning – yeah! We were on the road about 8:45 heading to Canyon Lake and what a difference a day makes. The wind had stopped, the sky was mostly clear, and the wildflowers were beautiful! It was difficult to take pictures from the RV because of the bug splats on the windows and zipping along at 60mph, but we did enjoy seeing them.
It was also interesting to note that almost every other car or RV we have seen on road have been either from Colorado or New Mexico! Guess everyone is eclipse chasing.

We had a quick stop in Luckenbach, Texas which is just outside of Fredericksburg. We put Willie Nelson on the radio and all sang along. There really isn’t anything there – a tourist gift shop, small restaurant, and music venue. They offer camping and had a special rate – only $450 for three nights! Fifteen minutes later, we were back on the road.

We arrived at Donna and Jerry’s house (friends of Phil and Marcia’s) about 11:30 this morning. After getting the RVs settled and having lunch, Jerry took us on a tour to see more bluebonnet flowers. The sheriff stopped and reprimanded us because we had gotten out of the truck and were taking pictures. He said all of the land up to the road is private property and you can’t stop and get out. You can take pictures from the car – no parking. Shame on us…
Anyway, they were beautiful.

We continued on to Johnson City and drove through the LBJ ranch. Unfortunately, it was after 4pm, so all of the buildings were closed, but we got a chance to see where he and Lady Bird are buried, the school he went to as a child, and landing strip where Air Force ½ landed. Air Force One was too big to land on the small landing strip, so he came in on a small plane – thus, “Air Force ½”!

The park rangers were out in force because they are using the landing strip as an eclipse viewing site tomorrow and were practicing “crowd control.” They told us they are allowing about 500 vehicles to come in the park for viewing. It sounds like it will be crazy there.

Back at their house, they made a wonderful dinner of pulled pork, beans, carrots, sweet potatoes and homemade corn bread. I could get used to this! We spent the rest of the evening visiting and look forward to meeting Donna’s family when they come for the eclipse party here. We’re hoping the weather holds out and we have clear skies.
