March 8, 2015 - Catavina Boulder Field to Fidel’s RV Park, El Pabellon Beach

We were on the road by 8:30 this morning heading north (and that is the Daylight Savings Time!) We took a short stop in El Rosario hoping we could get internet, but no luck, so we pressed on.
I saw a little map in the Baja Travel Club newsletter that prompted us to make a small detour. It only said, “La Lobera: Three miles out from Hwy 1 at km 47.5 is a magnificent sea lion crater where a sea cave collapsed, creating a secret beach. There’s a viewing area to watch los lobos del mar.” We found it easily and made the turn onto the hardpacked dirt road. We went about halfway down the road before we decided to park the RV and walk the rest of the way because the road had some serious trenches and ruts. Lucky for us, a carload of Mexican guys stopped and offered us a ride which we accepted. Thank you, Mario!

The cave/crater had a couple dozen sea lions resting in the sand and a few of the younger pups swimming in the water.

The water comes into the cave through the opening in the picture below.
When we first arrived the sun was out, but in a matter of 15 minutes, the fog started rolling in and the sky was totally overcast!
The building at the top of the hill was a fish processing plant of some kind. Because it is Sunday, there wasn’t anyone there.
The shoreline looking south from La Lobera had lots of cliffs and was quite scenic. We decided to head back to the RV since we didn’t know if it would rain or not and we didn’t want to take a chance of getting stuck again – this time in the mud!
It took us about a half hour to walk back to the RV, and by the time we got there, the sky was trying to clear! Figures.

We stopped at a couple other beaches along the way to see what they were like. El Socorro had free camping, but you parked above the water and the beach was all cobbled stones! It was not our idea of great beach camping.

We went into Lazaro Cardenas for lunch. We had yummy fish tacos at El Parque Restaurant. We had 3 fish and 1 shrimp taco for $67 pesos ($4.75 USD). In my opinion, they are best we have had so far on the trip!
After doing some internet in town, we headed back south about 8 miles to El Pabellon Beach. We decided to try Fidel’s RV park and are happy with our choice. There are no dunes here to block our view of the water. We quickly settled the RV and took a walk on the beach, collecting sand dollars and watching all the families finishing their picnics and driving on the beach. We stopped over at the other RV park and saw the Swiss couple we have met at several stops along our journey!
We had a great sunset and then were surprised to find out that our internet works here! Life is good!
