February 3, 2019 - Burton to Navasota, Texas

Day 34 Cross Country Bike Trip

It rained off and on most of the night and we woke to fog – lots of fog! After saying goodbye to our friend, Lee, we got back to the road to get started today.

Tobey unloaded his bike and then disappeared into the fog! Crews work round the clock – we could hear the backhoes and trucks off and on all night!Lee told us that they are drilling for gas in the area. This is one of the larger operations we went by about five miles from Burton.Shortly beyond here, there was a sign for a low bridge – 9’6”, and a detour back through Brenham. Well, we are 10’8” tall, so Tobey went on and I turned the RV around and detoured. We had planned to meet Marcia and Phil at Independence, so that’s where we all met.

Tobey took a picture of the low bridge … then told me they had a ramp around the bridge right at the same place and I wouldn’t have need to do the detour after all! Oh, well!2019-2-3 low bridgeIt was still foggy when Tobey rolled into Independence around 11 am. 2019-2-3 fogged glassesLots of condensation formed on his helmet and glasses, but he was still smiling! We all spotted these birds as we were getting closer to Washington-on-the-Brazos. They look like a large hawk, but for all I know they are vultures! Too high to see clearly!

Phil rode with Tobey from Independence to the Washington on the Brazos state historic site. After lunch, we spent time in the visitor’s center which has a nice historical timeline and photos. There is a replica of the original Texas Independence Hall which housed the Convention in 1836. The Texas Declaration of Independence was passed and signed here by fifty-nine delegates making Texas an independent country from Mexico. Another 8 miles to go and the fog was gone and temperatures had warmed up. We arrived in Navasota and Tobey was STILL smiling! After loading the bikes, we looked for a place to stay overnight. There was a municipal RV parking place before we got into town, but it is on the highway and next to the airport. It was also in terrible condition, so we ruled that out. We looked at one of the city parks, but it was too close to an elementary school. We settled on one of the church parking lots near the main street through town and will sleep here tonight.

Tobey spotted the Classic Rock Coffee Co & Kitchen on his way into town, so we walked over there after parking the RV. Good music, great mango smoothie, and a chance to relax was what we needed! They had a great sign in the restaurant, nothing more needs to be said!Today’s ride was 45 miles.
