Day 46 Cross Country Bike TripIt was time to ride again and Tobey was up and on the road before 9 this morning. We took LA Highway 90 east out of New Orleans which goes through the Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge. The only wildlife I saw was a dead opossum along the road and some birds. There were roads leading to trails, but they were not on our agenda today.
Bridges were a big part of the day. The first large drawbridge we crossed was over the Marquez Canal. It was pretty narrow and I took it slow. Tobey just pedaled faster to get across! We took a short break just before the Fort Pike Bridge (a little over 1/2 mile long) near the marina which goes between Lake Pontchartrain and The Rigolets. Most of the houses along the shores are built on stilts. There were some that were even two-story houses! The Pearl River runs between the borders of Louisiana and Mississippi and we had another drawbridge to cross! We made it! We are now in Mississippi!!Mississippi, however, didn’t treat Tobey well to start off. Just after our lunch break he had to ride another three miles on Hwy. 90. The road had lots of debris on it, including one VERY LARGE nail which bit his tire! Fortunately, I was only a mile behind him so I was able to stop and help while he changed his tube. The nail went all the way in and bent when it hit the rim. He had to use pliers to pull the nail out. Tire repaired, he was back on the road about 30 minutes later. We followed Lakeshore Road to South Beach Road along the coast. This road goes by Buccaneer State Park and lots of beautiful homes (on stilts) along the inland side of the road. I was following about 30 minutes behind Tobey and it rained on me most of the way. Tobey was far enough ahead of me that he didn’t get rained on!The last bridge of the day was on Highway 90 over Bay St. Louis. I was stopped waiting for a train to cross the bay before I could traverse the 2.1 mile bridge!Tobey got permission for us to stay at the Trinity Episcopal Church lot overnight here in Pass Christian. He rode 61.3 miles today, now topping 2300 for the trip so far!

This is a link that will show all of Tobey’s route so far. https://ridewithgps.com/events/71165-tobey-s-coast-to-coast-ride-2018-2019
On the left side of the map, it shows day by day stop and start points so you can look at each day’s route.
OR you can scroll to the bottom of the day-to-day and there is a box that says “Show all on Map”. If you click that, it will change the map view to show all days traveled so far (but be prepared for a short pause as takes a while for the file to load).
