Day 55 Cross Country Bike Trip
Tobey was out and on the road about 8:30 this morning. It was cloudy and a bit cooler when he started and the wind was about 15 mph CROSS and HEADWINDS – AGAIN!
There are lots of tree farms in Florida. We passed trees in varying degrees of maturity. There have also been lots of signs warning of trucks hauling timber entering the highway signs. We haven’t seen nearly as many trucks as we did in Texas, but it seems to be a big business.About 15 miles outside of Wellborn, Tobey met a couple from Germany who are doing the cross country bike trip from east to west. They are riding unassisted, meaning they carry all their gear and either camp or stay in motels. They have a LONG way to go, but he said they didn’t have any deadlines of when they had to finish. I spotted them later and said hi. They said I have an awesome husband! I agree!!
We stopped near High Springs for lunch after a 40 mile morning ride. Tobey got a chance to rest before taking off again for Gainesville. We have wandered on lots of county roads with no shoulders and when he got Highway 41, he was a happy guy. Nice surface AND a shoulder!I usually hang out after he takes off and follow behind to make sure he doesn’t have any problems. About 30 minutes after he left, it started to rain where I was parked. And then rain harder! I called him to let him know I was heading his way early to bring his jacket and to watch for me. It turned into a downpour and I could hardly see out the front window as I was driving. When I finally caught up to him, he was still outrunning the rain! This was the view ahead of me when he took off with his jacket on.The clouds were just racing across the sky. He was thankful for the jacket when the storm caught up to him!
Thank goodness the rain was short-lived and he was able to finish the last 12 miles into Gainesville with partly cloudy skies and a bit of a tailwind! His last couple miles were on a bike trail and he took some pictures of the flowers along the trail. NICE!The bonus for the day was a facetime call with our granddaughter! They called just as Tobey was arriving to the RV at the end of his ride. Both Nana and Poppy are happy campers tonight.
Tobey rode 69.8 miles today. The link to his ride is: https://ridewithgps.com/trips/31956916.
