I think I have said this before, but what a difference a day makes! It was in the high 70s yesterday, but overnight it started to rain and a front moved in. This morning was cold 50s - and windy – 16-20mph head and crosswinds – but the rain had stopped. Not a fun start. Needless to say, Tobey bundled up before heading out.
So what the heck is a King Cake and what does it have to do with Mardi Gras? Glad you asked!
Epiphany comes from the Greek word that means “to show.” Jesus first showed himself to the three wise men and to the world on this day. (January 6) Mardi Gras season begins January 6 and ends on Fat Tuesday, the day before Lent.
As a symbol of this Holy Day, (and season) a tiny plastic baby is placed inside each King Cake. The tradition was brought to New Orleans from France in 1870. The cakes are oval shaped, to symbolize the unity of faiths. Each cake is decorated in the traditional Mardi Gras colors: purple representing justice, green representing faith, and gold representing power. A small baby symbolizing the baby Jesus is traditionally hidden in each cake. Our plastic baby was in a plastic wrapper, but not in the cake. I suppose I could have hidden it before cutting the cake, but I didn’t.
We got the traditional cake which is more like a big cinnamon roll with frosting and sugar on top. We will have King Cake for a few more meals! There also come with cheese and strawberry fillings.
