Day 52 Cross Country Bike Trip
What a crazy day this has been weather-wise! It started raining about 6:30 this morning, but was only drizzling/mist when Tobey started off about 8.It was dreary for the first 15 – 20 miles, but then started to clear. By the time we stopped for the day, it was hot and sunny!
We both noticed all of the trees that looked like they had been snapped off like toothpicks. There were huge mounds of trees along the road that had been stacked, also. In some areas they were burning the trees. We also saw several homes and businesses with “blue tarp roofs”. Tobey asked one of the workers he saw and they told him it was the remnants from Hurricane Michael that passed this way in October 2018. The winds were between 150-200 mph! We traveled over 60 miles and saw this devastation the entire way! I can’t imagine how frightening it must have been!We stopped in Chattahoochee for lunch just past the dam. We crossed the Apalachicola River on the blue bridge in the background. The dam was built to create electricity and provide for flood control. Just east of the bridge, the town of Chattahoochee has a small RV campground. We were able to stop there to dump and refill our tanks for the remainder of our trip. It suffered damage, as well.As we left town after lunch I noticed the time and temperature clock said it was 86 degrees! AND the sun was shining!! WOOHOO!! Tobey was off and riding and notice – there are shadows on the road!Tobey said the last six miles were terrible – took him over an hour – but then again, we had a time change!! We are now in the Eastern time zone.
We stopped for the night in Quincy, Florida. We got permission from the sheriff’s office to park at the Piggly Wiggly lot for the night. We had dinner at Laredo Grill. It was two for one on the margaritas, so I had two! The first was a mango (okay), second was strawberry (better!). Glad we are parking here and I don’t have to drive anymore! (because I couldn’t!)The food was good, too! Tobey had fish tacos and I had garlic shrimp. It was a nice end to a long day!
Tobey rode 64.5 miles today. The link is https://ridewithpgs.com/trips/31864540.
This is a link that will show all of Tobey’s route so far. https://ridewithgps.com/events/71165-tobey-s-coast-to-coast-ride-2018-2019
On the left side of the map, it shows day by day stop and start points so you can look at each day’s route.
OR you can scroll to the bottom of the day-to-day and there is a box that says “Show all on Map”. If you click that, it will change the map view to show all days traveled so far (but be prepared for a short pause as takes a while for the file to load).
