Tobey and I arrived in Tulum this afternoon to begin our month-long stay at Villa Clarita Apartments. It was a long day – we left Fort Collins on the 10pm shuttle to the Denver airport and had to hang out until 3am when we could check in for our 5 am flight! We both dozed off and on Denver to Dallas, then grabbed breakfast before the next flight to Cancun. Lucky for us, we breezed through customs and immigration and headed out to catch the Ado bus to Tulum. The young man sold us the ticket for the express non-stop bus to Tulum, however, he neglected to tell us it wasn’t leaving for almost 3 hours! After two buses left for Playa del Carmen where we would normally transfer to another bus, we got him to change our ticket to the next bus. Changing buses is no big deal. Waiting another 2 hours for the non-stop is!
Barbara, the owner of the apartments, picked us up at the Tulum bus station when we finally arrived about 4:30 pm. We enjoyed visiting with her and Chris, her husband as we checked in to our apartment. Their dog, Maya, was happy to see us also! She walked right in and was disappointed we didn’t have any treats for her! They have made some major renovations, adding a fourth apartment and updating the swimming pool.
Barbara gave us a ride back to the central district and we stopped for dinner at a restaurant we have passed several times but I can’t remember the name! We had fish tacos and shrimp tacos. Each came with 4 tacos. They were okay but not exceptional, and with 2 soft drinks and tip it was $181 pesos. ($8.75USD)
We decided to walk to the Chedraui grocery store to pick up breakfast stuff and it started to rain. By the time we got to the store, we were soaked! We too a taxi back to the apartment for $40pesos ($2 USD) and it was much drier!
Neither of us really slept well at the airport or on the flights, so I am sure tonight will be a welcome respite! We shall see what the weather brings for tomorrow!
