September 19, 2022 - Eureka to Newton, Kansas

The words for the day – wind and heat. With the forecast to be 99 today, Tobey and Phil were up and on the road by 7:00 am. The moon was still out but the temperature was already 78!
As we left town, I spotted a tree full of vultures. Not a good sign, in my opinion!

Our first stop was in Rosalia, 17 miles down the road. They were doing good, so just refreshed water and they were on their way.

Another 17 miles down the road we got to Cassoday. They both enjoyed most of the road there because it was going north with a tail wind. They did take a long break but were not ready for lunch yet, so we went another 12 miles down the road and found a wide spot to stop since there were no towns.

Unfortunately, they had strong side and head winds for most of the rest of the day and the temperature was hovering near 99-100! Tobey made a comment to Phil while they were riding that 99.9% of the world’s population would say we were crazy to make this ride without having to!

They rode about 7 miles and we would meet up and refill their water bottles with ice water and they were on their way again.

We got to Newton, Kansas about 5pm and are at the Athletic City Park. The city’s website says they have RV parking with electric hookups, but we walked the entire park and didn’t find any. We are parked with some shade and hopefully the crosswind will eventually cool things off. It’s 7:30 pm and still 93 degrees with 31% humidity. UGH. There is a football game going at the athletic field. I can imagine how hot those players must feel.

Tobey rode 74 miles today and we will have another early start tomorrow.
