We were up early and Tobey was on the road by 8 this morning because the forecast was for hot weather - in the mid 90s!
What we didn't know was that the winds were going to be 15-20mph from the south, southwest. Tobey said the Kansas wind is the same as the Missouri wind!
Tobey did go by some tractors that were in much better condition than the ones we saw yesterday.
You have to love the signs you see on the road. I'm not sure we would have been able to figure this one out ...
When we got near Walnut, we saw signs saying the road was closed ahead a short distance outside of Walnut. I asked a couple locals and got detour directions. One fellow was directing me MANY miles out of the way. The second one gave me good directions which meant only a 3 mile detour. When Tobey arrived in Walnut, we loaded his bike and he rode inside with his bike over the two miles of gravel roads.
Just as the gentleman told me, we would come back to a paved road Tobey unloaded his bike and was back on his way.
We arrived in Chanute, Kansas about noon and treated ourselves to lunch at the Grain Bin Restaurant. It wasn't fancy and they only take cash, but the Reuben sandwich was really good. Tobey had the pork tenderloin sandwich. It was good, but not as good as mine! It was a busy place and the staff was really friendly.
We decided to camp at the city's Santa Fe Safari RV campground. It has electric and water hookups and a dump station and it's free for your first two nights! Another bonus is there is city WIFI here!
After riding 48 miles with crosswinds most of the day, we are cooling off with the air conditioning going and relaxing. It's 95 degrees right now with 40% humidity (the weather app says it feels like 100), so it's good to be inside. Tobey was asking earlier when he got to have a rest day on this ride, so today is the day. Tomorrow we are on our way to Eureka where our friends, Phil and Marcia, will join us for the rest of the ride back to Colorado.
