With it promising to be VERY hot today (already 77 degrees at 7:30!), Tobey got on the road about 7:30 heading to Eureka. I stayed at the campground and did the housekeeping chores and grocery shopping before heading out to follow him. No big surprise today – it was windy.
For the first part of the morning we were again on very small, narrow roads, but no traffic. That was good because much of the time the RV was rocking back and forth with the wind and rough roads. It felt like I was in a very small boat in a very big ocean during a storm! Needless to say, we got very poor gas mileage – about 7 miles per gallon. Yikes. Poor Tobey was blasted with side or head winds much of the day. It didn’t do anything to help his mileage, either!!!
I noticed that some of the trees are beginning to change to yellows.
This was one of the better roads today. Notice the roadbase!
We did NOT take this road.
We again went through lots of farm country. We saw some interesting sites along the way.
We are in cattle country, too!
Tobey noticed how they rotate the crops with the beans in the back and you can see the remnants of hay in the front.
Not sure what the flint hills are, but I am sure we will soon find out!
One farmer had a good sense of humor with his hungry dinosaur and fake vultures in a dead tree!
I spotted someone who might be Tobey’s new riding companion! HAHA
We stopped in Toronto for lunch and a break. The temperature was hovering near 100 and I hated that Tobey was going to get back on his bike. We tried to stop every 10 miles so I could refill his water bottles with ice. I worried about him having heat stroke, but he pulled through even though he said he jokingly stated he was starting to hallucinate the last 10 miles. He said he kept seeing our RV heading toward him to pick him up. 😊 Guess it was just wishful thinking. We arrived at the City Park in Eureka about 3 pm and he spent a couple hours recouping from the heat.
Our friends, Phil and Marcia, got here around 5pm and they will join us on the rest of the trip back to Colorado. After dinner we walked over to the playground area of the park to cool off a little. The guys had fun playing a bit in the kiddie water park.
Today’s ride was 64 miles but felt like 100…… Tobey and Phil are going to get on the road about 7 am tomorrow. It’s still 90 degrees at 8pm, so I hope we will be able to sleep. Wish we had electric hookups tonight.
