We have been in Scottsdale visiting family for the holidays and are now starting our “getaway vacation”!
Tobey and I met our friends from Fort Collins, Ann and Gary, at the airport in San Jose, Costa Rica. After waiting in the immigration line for over an hour, we were finally clear and ready to catch an UBER to our vacation rental. Tobey had a hard time getting a driver – every time we supposedly had a car, the driver cancelled! After 45 minutes, we finally flagged down an “off-duty” UBER driver and got to our condo. We paid him cash ($5000CC – about $8.00 US) and he was very happy with that!
Dinner was at Woody’s Pizza located in a little shopping area just outside the gates of the condo. Pizza, drinks, and a couple margaritas for four people was about $34. Not bad – and the pizza was good!
Ann and Gary left home about 2:30 am and we left at 4:30 am to catch our flights, so we were all exhausted from traveling. We played a couple short card games and called it a night by 9pm!
Today we went to explore downtown San Jose. We caught an UBER to Mercado Central and started from there. It was fun going through and looking at all the little stalls. You could find everything from souvenirs to fresh fish and meat, vegetables, clothes, and even pets. Crazy as it is, the only thing we bought was a couple postcards!
We did enjoy walking the several block pedestrian walk looking at the stores on both sides. After a short stop to share a pastry, we walked by the National Theatre and went to the Pre-Colombian Gold Museum.Admission to the museum is $15 USD. It is very interesting and we spent a couple hours learning about the currency of Costa Rica and how it has changed over the years. There were several displays of gold art with lots of signage explaining the progression of art and information about the indigenous people of Costa Rica. The large stone in this picture is actually almost five pounds of gold worth about $130,000 USD!After the museum it was time for lunch! We opted for tacos al pastor at a local lunch café. Gary wanted to check out La Iglesia de Nuestra Senora de las Merced. It was a short walk and the church is beautiful.Tonight’s dinner was at Pasta Pronto. It doesn’t look like much from the outside, but the food was outstanding and the service amazing! Our waiter is mixing Ann and Gary’s margaritas! Those margaritas brought smiles to their faces!Tobey had the Pasta Camaron Scampi and I had the Pasta Carbonara. Both were good, but mine was better! We have an early morning tomorrow since we scheduled a tour that picks us up at 6:00 AM!!! So goodnight!
