February 9, 2015 - Los Frailes

It was another quiet day at Los Frailes. We took the scooter off and went over to Los Arbolitos. It was only 2-1/2 miles each way, but it was a BUMPY 2-1/2 miles!

This is the first sign we saw that was in English! The beach area was actually quite small, and we hadn’t taken our snorkeling gear, so we didn’t stay. They do charge $30 pesos per person ($2.15 USD) to use the beach, showers and bathrooms for the day. Not bad.

Back at Los Frailes, we passed the day by walking on the beach, playing cards, reading, and chatting with some of the neighbors. We even met a guy from Missouri who also went to UMR and majored in Engineering Management, same as Tobey, but he graduated three years before Tobey. Small world!
We chatted with another couple who has been coming down to this beach for almost 20 years. I asked him about the watch towers we had spotted and he said they were guard towers. The land they are on was purchased, then fenced, and the owner put up about 20 of the towers to make sure no one was trespassing. There are about five of them left and he never sees anyone in them anymore.

This afternoon we did walk down to one of the fish camp co-ops and purchased two red snappers and they fileted them for us for $140 pesos ($10 USD). Tobey cooked them in foil on the grill tonight. They were okay, but neither of us was thrilled with how they turned out. We have enough for another meal and will try frying it instead.

Tomorrow we think we will climb the “mountain” at the end of our beach.
