Mexico RV Trip 2012 - un viaje mas grande - Day 11, 21.27918°N,-99.24899°W to Xilitla

This was our campsite last night! We drove 31 miles today and it only took a little over an hour. As we approached Xilitla we looked across the mountain valley to see the mist hanging in the mountains. This area is known to have fog so we were lucky.
Just outside of the town of Xilitla is Las Posas, a 37 hectare surrealist art garden. Edward James, a rich, eccentric Englishman originally wanted to live here, but found it was too far from town. He hired more than 150 local residents to build his concrete fantasy land.  We spent more than 4 hours exploring the grounds. Many of the structures are whimsical representations of nature. It is amazing to see what one man’s imagination can produce. To read more about Edward James you can check out this website: http://www.junglegossip.com/smithmag.html

Tobey and I climbed up part of the stairway of the Columna Gigante – Tobey went farther than me since I am not fond of heights!

We continued up the Avenue de las Serpientes (snakes). We were also greeted by the large hands.
It is very dry right now, so the river that flows through the property was low, but the waterfall was still beautiful to see. The water was very cold, but further down, there were teenagers swimming in some of the larger pools.
We wandered around this huge park for hours and finally came upon the Jardin Secreto. We didn’t see ANYONE else – I am sure that no one would follow the path we took – it was not on the map and took us a while to find our way back! We also talked with Miguel, a gentleman who works at Las Posas. His mother was a cook for Edward James, his father his chauffer, and they lived on the grounds when he was growing up. It was interesting to get his take on the place. We had dinner at Restauranto Coscadres  “la cebolla” which his mother and sister run. We also took the scooter to town to get some fresh veggies and spotted this really cool mountain peak in the distance.
Tonight we are boondock camping just outside Las Posas with their permission.
