February 1, 2023 - El Chalten to El Calafate, Argentina

We were up and out the door by 6:10 this morning walking to the other end of town to see the sunrise on Mount Fitz Roy at 6:35. We made it! This is the sky looking to the east. Mount Fitz Roy is to the west and the colors just got more beautiful as the sun was rising.

It's now 6:45 and the sun is up and the colors are disappearing so we headed back to the hotel for breakfast. Yes, it was chilly this morning and it was windy.

We had to be out of our room by 10:00 am but the shuttle to Calafate wasn't until 2:00. The hotel contacted the shuttle service for us to see if we could go earlier, but they said it was full. Ugh. We spent some time reading in the lobby area then walked again and had lunch. Spotted more of these birds.

2:00 pm and our transfer to El Calafate arrived and we were first on. Two more stops, then a third. At the third one a man came out and wanted to get on our shuttle because his wasn't until 4pm. The argument went back and forth, phone calls made, and all the while six passengers were sitting in the van with the windows closed and no air conditioning. Tobey finally reached up and honked the horn so the driver came back and turned on the AC. The couple got their way, even though there wasn't really any room for their luggage. The driver stuffed the two giagantic bags into the front passenger area right in front of us. Needless to say, we couldn't see out and it was difficult for the driver to see out the passenger window. Tobey and I decided we should have been more insistant ourselves to get on the earlier shuttle!

Then, to add to the frustration, we were 30 minutes late leaving El Chalten and FOUR of the passengers sitting behind us were sneezing, hacking, and blowing their noses nonstop! Our masks came quickly out of the backpack and on our faces. Tobey managed to snap some pictures out his side window. Beautiful!

Once settled in to our hotel, we walked into town for dinner and spotted another kind of bird.
We ended up at La Tablita Restaurant and shared the Mixed Meat plate for two and a salad. Needless to say, there was MORE than enough food! It had chicken, lamb and beef. With drinks and tip it was $10,000 pesos (about $29 USD).
The meal even came with entertainment. This dog kept coming in the restaurant and the staff kept shooing it outside. It returned and they tried giving it bones outside ... it returned! DUH. It was pretty funny watching the interaction.

Back to the hotel after 10:30 ... guess we are doing the Argentine dining thing whether we want to or not! Tomorrow is a full day excursion starting at 8:00 am, so goodnight!
