February 19, 2016 - Tulum, Mexico

Off to the beach today! We enjoyed a few hours in the sun and surf. We were surprised to see how the reconstruction of La Zebra was coming along after only one week! They front palapas were up with lounger-chairs in place, the bar was up and running, a “construction” wall up, scaffolding for the kitchen walls! Amazing. They really need to work quickly because the main tourist season starts in March and they need to be ready.
We took the 4pm bus back to town because we wanted to see the festivities for Carnaval 2016 in Tulum.
We were told the parade started at 6pm, so we hustled along and got to the town square and we waited ….. and waited …. and waited! It was finally dark after 7pm, and things got going!

There were floats, dancers, and more dancers.
Tobey especially enjoyed this young lady’s moves! We were shocked when the drum corps came by that there are only 6 drummers! We have heard them practicing many nights – late at night – for the last couple weeks. We were sure it had to be a much larger group!
As you can tell, they are pretty loud for just 6 drummers! Drummer video: https://youtu.be/H-dIDtoThAI
We also enjoyed the fire-juggling clown! Clown video: https://youtu.be/jbY0P_p9n3M
We grabbed some tacos from one of the street vendors after the parade then headed to the “fair grounds” to see the midway and entertainment.

Games of chance area big part of the entertainment. This game was similar to “3-card monte” where there is a different picture on the bottom of one of the discs. If you could guess which one after he shuffles them around, you win $50 pesos. If you are wrong, you pay $50 pesos! Almost everyone we saw lost their money.

On the main stage we watched the introductions of the royal court – from the junior king and queen all the way through princesses and up to the king and queen of Carnaval.

Notice the varying sizes of the crowns!

There were dancers and entertainment after almost an hour of introductions.

Don’t let these kiddos little size fool you – they could dance!

We decided to call it a night about 10:45 and headed home. It was a fun day!
