The Katy Trail Adventure
During breakfast we watched this guy hang out behind our fence. He is pretty young and has been around most of the summer content to eat our lilacs and the Russian olives by the cattail pond. As we finished, he got up and stretched before wandering off to start his adventure. We got busy and finished packing the RV so we could get on the road, too!
Tobey is going to bike the Katy Trail across Missouri. Our friends, Phil and Marcia will be joining us on this adventure – Phil on his bike and Marcia driving their motorhome. We will meet up in Pleasant Hill, Missouri on Thursday afternoon.
We headed east along Highway 14 into the plains of Colorado. It’s amazing how quickly the landscape levels out as we leave the mountains in the distance. In addition to fields of corn, beans, alfalfa, and sorghum, there are plenty of oil rigs and tanks and feedlots. You can smell the feedlots for quite a distance. Tobey just said that is the smell of money! We stopped in Sterling, Colorado for lunch at the Earl P. Franklin city park. There is a great dog park there and Penny had fun chasing a stick before AND after lunch! The park is right across the street from one of Tobey’s old customers, Royal Printing. After lunch, Tobey walked over and sure enough, John was there! They visited for a while before we took off. Small town folks are great! We picked up Highway 6 from Sterling and were soon in Nebraska. It’s a good thing there is a sign because it looks the same as Colorado, although neither of us had seen elevators like the one below. We meandered east then headed north on Highway 83 and near North Platte we went by a communication station. Looks pretty space-age to me!We are camping at Cody Park, a city park in North Platte right by the North Platte River. The campground is $8 per night and not crowded. There was only one other camper when we pulled in, but a few came in later. After dinner, we took Penny for a nice walk around the park. In addition to the camping area, there is a sports complex, tennis courts, playgrounds and a train display. Kids were playing flag football and there wasn’t much social distancing among the adults. We only saw two people wearing masks. The sun was setting as we made our way around the park. Cody Park also has a collection of animals including bison, elk, deer, llamas, donkeys, and birds. This elk was by himself, but bugling away! Poor fellow. We started our day with a view of a deer and we ended our day here in North Platte with a view of deer!
