June 4, 2017 - Essaouira to Casablanca, Morocco

This was our last full day in Morocco. We had sunny skies and a nice view of the water before our departure from Essaouira.

Shortly after leaving town we saw three guys training on the highway. Our driver slowed the bus so we could get a good look!

We then retraced several miles back to Casablanca, going past agricultural lands and past douars. A douar is like a family commune where the Berber tribe, or family, lives and farms together. There are usually several houses. This is what they look like today.

Again, we passed wheat fields and hard working donkeys.T

he production of prickly pear cactus is also big in this area. Apparently, the oil from the seeds is used in chemo-prevention medication and is a good revenue source for the Moroccan farmers. We went by thousands of plants!

We stopped at the same rest stop and took time to look around their gardens. It was nice to be off the bus!

We arrived back to Casablanca around 3pm and had a chance to relax before our farewell dinner. Over the last 9 days we traveled over 2600 km – 1615 miles with our Insight Vacations tour. We had 22 people in our group and we were the only ones from the USA. There were 2 from Canada, 1 from Puerto Rico, and the rest from Australia. It was an interesting mix. Map of tour

Our farewell dinner was held at Rick’s Cafe, from Casablanca.

Contrary to what people may think, the movie Casablanca, was NOT filmed in Morocco, it was all filmed in California. The restaurant was designed to recreate the bar made famous by Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, but did not open until 2004! It is set in an old courtyard-style mansion built against the walls of the Old Medina of Casablanca.

Tomorrow we have a 5:30 wake up call and a 7am transfer to the airport where we head to Madrid for three nights. “Ila yemsek ‘la khir” or goodbye from Morocco!
