As the date approached, Colorado was hit with rain – a week of it - and horrible flooding that made the national news. We were lucky and had no damage, so we decided to keep our original plans and head north!
Wednesday we hit the road at 6:30 a.m. to begin our trek. The sunrise over Fort Collins was fabulous!
We continued north to Wyoming then turned east into Nebraska then swinging north again before entering South Dakota. We passed fields of the sunflowers awaiting harvest. Tobey commented that was where my birdfeed comes from. In Nebraska some of the cornfields have been harvested, while others are golden, awaiting the harvest.
We camped at Hart Ranch RV Resort, just south of Rapid City, South Dakota. It was a nice park, with lots of amenities – something we aren’t really used to!
After setting up camp, we took a drive into Rapid City. We stopped at the visitor’s center and looked at several displays about the area and picked up lots of brochures. Onward to town, we stopped to see a section of the Berlin Wall which had been located between the Brandenburg Gate and Checkpoint Charlie from 1961-1989. When the Wall fell in 1989, this portion was moved to the U.S. and was donated in gratitude to all the military chaplains who in time of war and peace, faithfully served God and Country.
It was interesting to read all of the signs telling about the construction of the Wall, as well as the efforts of people on the East to escape to the West.
In the historic downtown section of Rapid City we were greeted by the City of Presidents, a series of life-size bronze statues of our nation’s past presidents.
The City of Presidents project began is 2000 to honor the legacy of the American presidency. The project was privately funded. We walked several blocks looking at the different sculptures which were really well done.
I would highly recommend spending an hour walking though Rapid City, enjoying the really well done City of Presidents!
