Today is the start of a “girls” getaway. Two of my dearest friends, Kathryn and Carolyn, flew to Denver from Iowa to join me for a week’s trip in Colorado.
After a 2 hour drive to the airport – only 76 miles! – we loaded their bags and were off to Estes Park. The drive up the Big Thompson Canyon is one of our favorites.
We made one stop to watch the Big Thompson River. It’s hard to believe this little stream has had two major floods, one in 1976 which killed 143 people, and one in 2013 and claimed 8 lives. We dragged ourselves away and were on to Estes Park. Coming into town we spotted three elk and pulled into the hotel they were visiting!I love watching these animals!
After checking into our hotel, we drove into town for dinner and window shopping. It was a fun start to our trip. Tomorrow will be a busy day as we make our way to Montrose in southern Colorado.
