After our tour of the palace, we were delivered back to the souk market area. We had a brief snack and drink provided by the tour and were treated to a rooftop view over the market square. To the left of the green awnings were alleyways filled with shop after shop.
We had about 1-1/2 hours to look around and shop before we were taken back to the hotel. Wandering down the alleyways was fun. I loved the architecture and marveled at the beautiful doors!
The variety of shops was amazing – pottery, traditional clothing, metal works, fruits, vegetables, spices, jewelry, rugs and more.Tobey, Wendy, and I went swimming and relaxed by the pool for a couple hours before taking a taxi back to the market for a little more shopping and a local dinner. It was only 20DM (about $2USD) each direction – very reasonable!
Every open air restaurant was vying for our business and we decided on Rashida’s. That is Rashida behind the food. We decided on two orders of “mixed” kabobs and split them three ways. There were 18 kabobs total for $120DM and it included Moroccan mint tea after the meal ($12 USD)!
This was our meal being cooked while we waited.
We had so much fun. Every time a group of people passed the restaurant, Tobey helped Rashid call customers into their restaurant, telling them how good it was! After dinner, Rashid brought our tea, and then more tea, and more!
Rashid and the other waiters told us that they enjoy having smiling customers – and if we come back tomorrow, dinner is free!
Again, we saw many cats in the market area. This little guy hung out under our table during dinner begging for scraps. Poor thing was SO skinny!
Marrakesh has been fun and we enjoyed having free time to see more of the “real” Morocco and not just the upscale tourist stops.
