Really!
Back in November Tobey suggested we go to Iceland for a Northern Lights tour. It sounded like a great idea so I called our friend, Wendy, and asked if she wanted to go. She was in, so we booked it. Today was the day. Short trip - Denver to Reykjavik leaving February 20, three nights in Iceland with tours booked every day, then fly home on February 24. A bit crazy, but why not?
We picked Wendy up at 11:30 this morning and headed to the airport, stopping to pick up sandwiches to take on the plane because IcelandAir does not serve food on their flights. No big deal, we were prepared. We checked in and headed to the gate. Tobey & I decided to go ahead and have our "linner" (lunch & dinner combo) before the flight. While eating we had a gate change. No big deal, Tobey and Wendy moved our stuff while I finished eating. Five minutes later another text - our flight was cancelled! IcelandAir has one flight per day from Denver to Reykjavik. We spent the next two-plus hours trying to get rescheduled - hoping we could still depart today, but to no avail. TOMORROW was the earliest. UGH. The non-stop was not available, so we are going to fly from Denver to Washington Dulles Airport, then Reykjavik and arrive a day later. Instead of arriving on February 21, we will arrived February 22 and our three nights are now two nights.
Next - find a hotel near the airport that has rooms available. We had most of our cold-weather gear packed and it was COLD waiting for the hotel shuttle!
We are spending the night at a Embassy Suites Hotel in Denver that the airline is "supposed" to be paying for, but their computers went down we have to submit expenses for reimbursement with the airline. What a mess. ANYWAY, we are at the hotel, had dinner here, and will settle in for the night.
Tomorrow morning we have calls to make to try to rearrange tours that are booked and we cancelled the one that we will miss.
We will keep you posted how things go. Wish us luck!
